For those just beginning a study of ancient Mesopotamia (Assyria, Babylonia, etc.), you will want to read these two books. They don't take into account NC, but they will familiarize you with sites, researchers, and the basic contours of history.

Bertman, Stephen.
2003     Handbook to Life in Ancient Mesopotamia. New York: Oxford University Press. Originally published with same title by Facts on File, 2003.

Roaf, Michael.
1990     Cultural Atlas of Mesopotamia and the Ancient Near East. NY: Facts on File.
